Description
This is an impressive and rare antique safe manufactured by Hobbs & Co of London in 1898 — now over 125 years old. The safe is a genuine piece of Victorian-era security history and is suitable as a feature display piece or collector’s item.
Its most distinctive feature is the original Hobbs Protector lock — also called the ‘moveable lock’ — an early 1850s design by Alfred Charles Hobbs, the American locksmith who famously became the first person to publicly pick the six-lever Chubb detector lock at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in London in 1851. Hobbs designed the Protector lock specifically to be unpickable, and to this day these locks remain very difficult to open without the original key.
External dimensions: 850 mm H × 690 mm W × 700 mm D. This unit is sold as-is — no modern security rating applies. Listed at local pickup price only from 2–3/227 Main Street, Osborne Park WA 6017. Contact MSC Safe Co on (08) 9344 1962 for viewing and delivery enquiries.
